the fatal five

Young drivers aged between 17-25 years currently make up more than a third (38%) of all dangerous driving endorsements, despite accounting for just 7% of all full licence holders.

Criminal Use of Bedfordshire’s Roads is in the Spotlight

The Partnership supports the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Operation Spotlight campaign.

The Fatal Five make up the most common offences that endanger road users on a daily basis.

The consequences of breaking these laws can be devastating.

This includes the life changing news that must be delivered to the families.

Inappropriate Speed

Camera vans are active throughout Operation Spotlight to catch speeding drivers.

WHO data shows that every 1% increase in average speed increases the risk of a fatal collision by 4%.

Protect your life and those around you. Don't speed.

The Data

Over 1,000 people were killed or seriously injured on Bedfordshire, Cambridge, and Hertfordshire roads in 2024.

Many involved reckless driving, speeding, drink or drugs, mobile phones, or not wearing a seatbelt.

Mobile Phones

Using a mobile phone while driving can have fatal consequences.

Even if you text with your phone on your lap, the Police have ways to see you.

Drink Driving

It is not possible to say how much alcohol you can drink and stay below the limit, as the way alcohol affects you depends on many factors (rate of energy your body uses, alcohol type, what you’ve eaten, stress levels).

Poor Driving Behaviour Risks Lives

Bad decision making, and avoidable lapses in concentration, put yourself and other road users in danger.

Driving carelessly includes eating and drinking behind the wheel, risky under and overtaking, and driving whilst fatigued.
